My name is Jennifer Matus and I am so thrilled to be embarking on my 17th year (Wow! Already??) of educating children! I graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a degree in Elementary Education and a specialization in Early Childhood Studies. Promptly after, I proudly began my teaching career in the Eanes district at Bridge Point Elementary in the Special Education department, and then moved right into teaching third grade for the many years after…except for one. My sixth year at Bridge Point was incredibly challenging, yet extremely enjoyable and rewarding, as I had the amazing experience of being a Bridge Point Elementary Kindergarten teacher. This was truly an unforgettable experience- as I am sure you can imagine! :) This past year, I was beyond thrilled to finally join my forever family at Cedar Creek Elementary and become a part of the amazing fifth grade team here. I am truly looking forward to my second year of teaching Language Arts and Social Studies to the amazing 5th graders in this incredible community!!
My husband, Lance, is also a fifth grade teacher in the Eanes district and teaches Science at Eanes Elementary. He actually proposed to me in my classroom with the children all participating and looking on (what a brave guy!), and I am so excited to say that this summer we just celebrated our eleven year wedding anniversary! We have three amazing children- our full of life daughter, Meghan, who is 9 years old and will be in fourth grade here at CCE, our little snuggler, Tyler, who is 7 years old and will be a big shot second grader this year at CCE, and our spunky little blessing, Weston, who just turned 4 years old in August and attends the CCE Child Development Center three days a week. Lance and I have truly both enjoyed being teachers and feel so incredibly blessed to also be on the other side, learning as parents along the way too! Those precious moments really do go by way too quickly!!
When out of the classroom, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, fitness and nutrition, as well as traveling to new places and experiencing new things. This summer we have also had fun playing with the newest addition to our family, an energetic Chocolate Lab named Toro. :) Although I was born and raised in Houston, I truly feel like Austin is where I was always meant to be... and of course I already feel right at home here at Cedar Creek Elementary!
My mother was also an elementary school teacher in Houston for 38 years and I can always remember watching her while growing up and knowing that teaching is where I would also be one day. Helping students learn and seeing that spark in their eyes is definitely something that you can never trade! Thank you so much for trusting me with your precious children. I truly look forward to working with you and your 5th grader, and getting to know your entire family. I can already tell this is going to be one AMAZING school year!!
